Bio:I've lived through many phases and had a rich and varied life so far, from conservative religious boarding schools to underground clubs in Hollywood. When I finally landed in San Francisco at the age of 22, I fell in love with the city and the Grateful Dead, and embraced my true hippie nature. Now I'm a mom and I find myself right in the abundant center of life. I live with my husband and toddler son in a post-war cottage with a view in my most favorite city in the world.

I own my own health-information consulting business, primarily focused on gathering data for cancer research. I am also a doula and an absolute geek for all things related to pregnancy, birth and parenting. Until my son was born, I spent pretty much all my time on work. Now I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to be the best parent I can be. That's turning out to be a very tall order. Motherhood is indescribably challenging and indescribably rewarding for me. I'm madly in love with my son.

Music is a defining force in my life. From disco to goth to industrial to punk to ska to 80's pop to hip-hop to metal to "classic rock" to house to (genuine) country to folk to the Dead, if it's good I love it and I'll learn from it. I have my own finely developed measures of quality, though, and I am picky. I just don't dismiss any genre out of hand.

I am lucky enough to have an amazing bunch of friends scattered all over the world. And I love to build new connections too. I'm generally fascinated with people, and with human relations. I'm passionate about the environment and I enjoy talking about politics and things that matter, but I'm not a true radical/fanatic about anything. I believe that the only way to change the world is by building relationships, finding common ground, heart to heart and face to face. I'm a liberal Christian who believes that my charge is to love 'em all and let God sort 'em out.

This journal is part public, part friends-only, and filtered. If you're interested in adding me, please COMMENT and let me know how you found me and why you'd like to add me. I don't have any particular restrictions on adding LJ friends, but I do write a lot of personal stuff here so a little "hello" would be nice. Thanks!

I also have another journal that focuses on my son and on parenting that I'd be happy to add you to if you ask.

I also have a blog-type journal HERE. I collect weird, funny, interesting, and random things there. It's like a file cabinet of stuff I wish I could share with the world.

READ THIS BOOK ONLINE: http://www.mcwilliams.com/books/books/aint/toc.htm
It's my favorite book about privacy, laws, "victimless crimes" and freedom. It's easy to read, broken up into short chunks, and entertaining to boot. READ IT!!

SOME FAVORITE QUOTES
(a work in progress)

"...the claim that God hates homosexuals ranks up there with the biggest lies ever told. The Bible is emphatic: God loves all of us -- gay or straight, young or old, female or male, saint or sinner. 'Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance,' wrote the apostle Paul. 'Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners' (1 Tim 1:15), and that means all of us."
--Stephen Chavez (Adventist Review, May 27, 1999)

"An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."
--Martin Luther King, Jr.

"We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights. The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence, but we stiff creep at horse-and-buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter. Perhaps it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging dark of segregation to say, "Wait." But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate-filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your black brothers and sisters; when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see ominous clouds of inferiority beginning to form in her little mental sky, and see her beginning to distort her personality by developing an unconscious bitterness toward white people; when you have to concoct an answer for a five-year-old son who is asking: "Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?"; when you take a cross-county drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading "white" and "colored"; when your first name becomes "nigger," your middle name becomes "boy" (however old you are) and your last name becomes "John," and your wife and mother are never given the respected title "Mrs."; when you are harried by day and haunted by night by the fact that you are a Negro, living constantly at tiptoe stance, never quite knowing what to expect next, and are plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; when you no forever fighting a degenerating sense of "nobodiness" then you will understand why we find it difficult to wait. There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair. I hope, sirs, you can understand our legitimate and unavoidable impatience." ~Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from a Birmingham Jail

And more from Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

"The greatest sin of our time is not the few who have destroyed but the vast majority who sat idly by."

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
